What's for dinner? Sweet Potato - Pie, Shanks, Scrolls and a lovely Galette.
Three nourishing and comforting recipes on our dinner table - and irresistible scrolls!

What’s for dinner? It’s the eternal question, even in our cooking and food obsessed household. I’ve recently fallen back in love with sweet potatoes. They’re in season and at my weekly farmer’s market so they’re now a staple and I’m enjoying finding different ways of cooking with them. They’re just a fantastic base ingredient, especially in the cooler months.
So today I’m sharing FOUR Sweet Potato recipes that we love:
My Fancy Fanned Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie - it’s just a better pie
Lamb Shanks with Sweet Potato Mash - the classic we love
Crispy Sweet Potato Galette - easy, delicious, satisfying
Sweet Potato Cinnamon Scrolls with Cream Cheese - just the best flavour combo
I don’t need much convincing beyond seasonality and flavour, but I think sweet potatoes are also popping up a lot lately because we’re re-discovering their benefits, especially for those who train or are looking to support themselves better during life’s changes, such as perimenopause.
What makes them good? Sweet potatoes are a nutrient-rich source of complex carbohydrates, making them ideal for sustained energy during training and post-workout recovery. They're packed with fibre, antioxidants, potassium and magnesium, which support muscle function, reduce inflammation and aid gut health. For women in perimenopause, they help balance blood sugar, support hormonal health, and promote steady energy, which is key for managing mood, metabolism and fatigue. Most importantly for me, their natural sweetness satisfies cravings in a nourishing way, making them a feel-good choice for both active days and hormonal shifts.
I hope these recipes give you some dinner inspo - and comforting nourishment like they do for us!
Fancy Fanned Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie
This is essentially a classic shepherd’s pie but rather than roasting and mashing the potato top, I thought it would be easier and prettier to slice and fan a sweet potato. There are plenty of veggies in this recipe which makes it super wholesome and great for the kids - they wolf it right down. The filling makes enough for six, but for our family of four I often freeze the leftovers to use another day for a pie or with pasta.
